Frederick Douglass, fut un célèbre abolitionniste noir né esclave et s’étant échappé. Malgré l’illégalité de sa liberté, il devint fonctionnaire publique et membre d’importantes sociétés abolitionnistes telles que la Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. Il devint en 1872 le premier candidat noir à se présenter aux élections présidentielles des États-Unis.
