Fr Zachary Macaulay, ancien administrateur de plantations en Jamaïque, fut un philanthrope écossais qui dédia sa vie au mouvement abolitionniste. Il fut intégré au conseil d’administration du Sierra Leone, nouvelle colonie africaine fondée par William Wilberforce et d’autres abolitionnistes pour accueillir des esclaves affranchis. Macaulay en devint le gouverneur entre 1793 et 1799. “The Anti-Slavery Reporter” informa sur l’état des mouvements abolitionnistes sur le plan international, et détailla les avancées juridiques et les procédures parlementaires qui, dans le sillage de l’interdiction de la traite (1807), menèrent à l’abolition de l’esclavage en Grande Bretagne et dans ses colonies (1833).
