L’hebdomadaire paraît en même temps que le mensuel “The Anglo-African Magazine”. En 1861, faisant face à des difficultés financières, Thomas Hamilton est contraint de vendre le journal à George Lawrence Jr. et James Redpath qui le renomment “The Palm and Pine”. Le frère de Thomas, Robert Hamilton, relance cependant le périodique sous le titre “The Anglo-African” quelques mois plus tard. Le journal inspire Robert Campbell qui publie à partir de 1863 à Lagos, Nigeria, “The Anglo-African”.
